Two-Post Hoist Safety: An Illustrated Pre-Use Guide

A safe lift starts before the vehicle leaves the floor. This illustrated guide explains what trained operators should check and when to stop and ask for help.

This is general safety information, not an operating procedure for every two-post hoist. Always use the instructions for the specific hoist, the vehicle manufacturer's lifting information and your workplace's safe system of work. Component designs, controls and locking sequences vary between models.

1. Before starting

Use the hoist only if you are trained and authorised for that model. Make sure its operating instructions are available, its inspection and maintenance arrangements are current, and any reported defects have been resolved.

Confirm that the vehicle is suitable for the hoist's rated capacity, loading arrangement and permitted lifting accessories. Vehicle mass alone does not establish compatibility. Check the work area for obstructions, spills and people who could enter the lifting zone.

2. Six pre-use inspection areas

Illustrated two-post hoist inspection areas: controls, arm restraints, lifting pads, visible cables, hydraulic connections and approved adaptors.

Illustration: six inspection areas adapted from the supplied reference. This AI-assisted illustration is not an exact component drawing or a vehicle lifting-point map. Check the equipment actually fitted to your hoist.

  • Controls: Check that controls are identified, undamaged and working as specified. Carry out any unloaded function test using the model's procedure. Where a hold-to-run control is fitted, movement should stop when it is released. Never bypass a control or safety device.

  • Arm restraints: Check the swing-arm restraint system using the manufacturer's method. These restraints prevent unwanted arm movement; they are different from the carriage safety locks. Do not assume that every model engages or releases at the same position.

  • Lifting pads: Look for damaged, loose, excessively worn or contaminated contact pads. The pad or adaptor must suit the vehicle's specified lifting point and sit correctly on the arm assembly.

  • Visible cables: Where fitted, visually check accessible synchronising ropes, cables or chains for damage, corrosion or other deterioration. Do not remove guards, reach into moving equipment or adjust cable tension as part of an operator check.

  • Hydraulic connections: Look for visible leakage, damaged hoses and damaged fittings from a safe position. Do not use your hands to search for a pressurised leak. Hydraulic repairs require the correct isolation procedure and competent personnel.

  • Approved adaptors: Use only adaptors approved for the hoist and vehicle application, within the manufacturer's engagement and extension limits. Do not use timber, loose blocks or improvised extensions to reach a lifting point.

3. Position the vehicle using its specified lifting points

Follow the hoist manufacturer's loading instructions and the vehicle manufacturer's lifting-point information. Position the arms so the correct pads or approved adaptors can engage those points without exceeding the hoist's limits.

There is no universal rule that the heavier end of every vehicle belongs over the shorter arms. The correct arrangement depends on the hoist design, vehicle geometry and centre of gravity. If you cannot confirm the lifting points or achieve the required arrangement, do not lift the vehicle.

4. Pause for the initial support check

At the initial check position specified by the hoist manufacturer, pause and confirm that every contact pad is correctly seated, the arm restraints have engaged as intended and the vehicle is supported as required. Make these checks from a safe position outside the hazard zone.

Do not treat 10 cm as a universal check height for every hoist. If a pad has moved, a restraint has not engaged or the vehicle appears unstable, stop. Return the vehicle fully to the floor using the normal procedure only if it is safe to do so, then correct the setup. Never reposition a loaded arm or pad.

5. Secure the hoist before work and keep lowering clear

Before anyone works beneath the vehicle, confirm that the hoist's mechanical safety system is engaged as required by its operating manual. Where the instructions require lowering onto the carriage locks, follow that sequence. Do not rely on hydraulic pressure alone or disengage arm restraints while the vehicle remains supported.

Changes to the vehicle's weight distribution, such as removing a major component, can affect stability. Plan that work using the vehicle and hoist instructions; stop if the required safe support arrangement cannot be established.

Before lowering, clear people, tools and equipment from underneath and around the vehicle. Use the model-specific lowering and lock-release sequence. Move the arms away and drive out only after the vehicle is fully supported on the floor and the arms are clear.

6. Defects and maintenance: stop, do not improvise

Do not use a hoist with a failed safety device, damaged pad or arm, visible leakage, unusual movement, damaged cable, or movement around its anchors or supporting concrete. Follow the workplace out-of-service procedure and arrange competent inspection.

If a vehicle is already raised and a fault develops, keep everyone clear and seek competent assistance. Do not improvise a recovery, loosen hydraulic fittings or attempt a repair beneath the affected vehicle.

Operator checks do not replace planned servicing. Cable adjustment, anchor work, hydraulic repairs, electrical work and safety-system repairs require appropriate competence and the correct model-specific procedure. Record defects, repairs and the decision to return the hoist to service.
