How to Use a Wheel Balancing Machine Safely

A wheel balancer measures wheel and tyre imbalance while the assembly rotates. It then indicates where corrective weight should be fitted and how much correction is required. The available balancing modes, data-entry method and weight-placement guidance vary by machine, so the operating manual for the specific model remains the primary reference.

Correct wheel balancing can help reduce vibration caused by wheel and tyre imbalance. It does not replace inspection for a damaged wheel, tyre defect, incorrect tyre fitment, worn suspension component or another vehicle fault.

Main parts of a wheel balancer

Most workshop wheel balancers include a spindle or shaft, wheel-mounting cones or adaptors, a clamping device, a measuring system, an operator display and controls, and a wheel guard where fitted. Some models also provide automatic dimension input or assisted weight-positioning features.

These features are model-dependent. Do not assume that a procedure shown on one balancer applies to another machine.

Before starting

  1. Read the machine instructions and confirm that the operator is trained for that model.

  2. Check the wheel and tyre for visible damage, lodged debris and unsafe condition. Stop if the assembly is not suitable for balancing.

  3. Remove old balance weights when required by the workshop procedure, and clean dirt from the wheel mounting faces.

  4. Inspect the shaft, cone, flange and adaptor surfaces. Contamination or damage at these contact points can cause an incorrect or unrepeatable reading.

  5. Select the correct cone, flange or adaptor for the wheel. The wheel must be centred and secured without damaging it.

  6. Confirm that the balancer is stable, the work area is clear, and the guard and controls are in serviceable condition.

Balancing procedure

1. Mount the wheel correctly

Fit the wheel using the mounting method specified for the machine and wheel type. Tighten the clamping device securely and confirm that the wheel is seated squarely. Incorrect centring is a common cause of inconsistent results.

2. Enter the wheel data

Enter or measure the required wheel dimensions according to the machine instructions. Depending on the model, this may include distance, width and diameter. Check the selected balancing mode and weight position before starting the cycle.

3. Run the measurement cycle

Lower the wheel guard where required and start the cycle. Keep hands, tools, clothing and other objects away from the rotating assembly. Do not try to slow or stop the wheel by hand.

4. Fit the corrective weights

After the wheel stops, follow the display guidance for the correction amount and position. Use the correct weight type for the wheel and fit it securely without damaging the rim.

5. Recheck the result

Run a verification cycle after the weights are fitted. Confirm that the display indicates an acceptable result for that machine and operating procedure. If the result changes significantly after remounting, inspect the mounting method, cones, adaptors and contact surfaces before repeating the process.

When the operator should stop

Stop using the balancer and arrange qualified service when there is repeated calibration failure, abnormal noise or vibration, a damaged shaft or mounting component, overheating, a persistent fault code, an electrical problem, or a result that remains inconsistent after correct mounting checks.

Operators should not open the cabinet, bypass a guard, repair mains wiring or adjust internal sensors unless they are trained and authorised to do so.
