Scissor Hoist Not Lifting as Expected: When to Stop and Seek Support

If a scissor hoist struggles to lift, stops unexpectedly or behaves differently from its normal operation, do not assume that adding blocks or repeatedly trying again will solve it. Follow the site's safe stop and out-of-service procedure and arrange an assessment appropriate to the equipment.

Rated capacity is not the only operating limit

The rating plate and manual describe the conditions under which a particular hoist may be used. Vehicle suitability also depends on the permitted lifting points, load distribution, lifting configuration and approved accessories. Being below the headline capacity does not by itself establish a safe setup.

Do not use a general clearance rule

Scissor-hoist designs differ. This article does not prescribe a universal starting gap, cylinder angle or block height. Use only the setup and contact arrangements specified for the actual model and vehicle.

Do not use loose timber, improvised ramps or unapproved stacked pads to overcome a lifting problem. Manufacturer-approved approach ramps or adapters, where applicable, must be selected and used for their intended purpose; they do not replace fault diagnosis.

Avoid repeated attempts and unauthorised adjustment

Stop if there is abnormal movement, unusual noise, leakage, a fault indication or a safety device that does not operate correctly. Do not change hydraulic pressure settings, bypass a lock or interlock, open electrical equipment or attempt hydraulic repairs to obtain more lifting force.

If a vehicle is raised or unstable, keep people clear and seek competent assistance. Do not go beneath it or attempt an improvised recovery. A competent technician should determine the cause and the safe return-to-service requirements using the equipment documentation.

Information to provide when requesting service

Record the hoist make, model, serial number, rating-plate details, vehicle details and what happened. Note any displayed fault message and whether the problem is new. Photographs taken from a safe position and existing service records can help the technician assess the next step.
